The Weight of These Wings

Miranda Lambert

2016 - Vanner Records.  If you have been following Strictly Country for a while now, you will know that we are not fans of Miranda Lambert and here is why… first and foremost, the one thing that fans do not know about Miranda is that when she first hit the music scene—the industry basically told her that she had no talent.  Then a few years went by and the industry was looking for the next female entertainer to make it big and someone suggested Miranda. Thus her career began. However, my biggest pet peeve about Miranda is her voice!  I do know that she was born and raised in Texas, but the twang that she puts into her vocals sounds like it is make-believe!  I finally have hard core proof of this cover-up and its found right on this album in her song “Smoking Jacket.”  In this song you will hear Miranda’s true vocal talents, which are beautiful, even though the song does not contain any weight.  The worst part of her mock vocals is the fact that her popularity has now brought a wide variety of want-to-be entertainers who try to emulate this falsified twang.  The end result is more dreadful than music!  This is a dual album that consists of twelve songs on each CD.  The album opens with “Runnin’ Just In Case,” a song that is very reminiscent of Kelly Lang’s song “Dead Girl Walking.”  Another song that has a melody reminiscent of another well known melody is found in “For The Birds,” as it sounds much like Kris Kristofferson’s 1971 hit “Me And Bobby McGee.” Then we come upon “To Learn Her,” which is a total rip off of  Phil Spector’s 1958 hit song “To Know Him Is To Love Him.” The album continues with more borrowed melodies, to many to mention. We really do take a listen to each of Miranda’s albums with an open mind while hoping to find that one song that will finally touch our hearts and souls.  Set aside her ‘falsified’ vocals, we can not find one song that has enough weight (heart and soul) to say take a listen! We will give Miranda credit for writing all but four of the songs on this twenty-four cut dual album including the ‘borrowed’ melody songs. You would think that someone who hails from a major heart of Country Music could create far more interesting ditties that are not rip offs of someone else's songs! -$
