Willie’s Stash: Volume 2

Willie And The Boys

2017 - Sony Music Entertainment.  If one were to refer to Willie’s Stash, one might believe that we are talking about his marijuana stash.  There is no need to smoke Willie’s weed; to truly enjoy this project!  I often think about well-known entertainers like Willie and how many songs they have recorded over the years in which were never released to the public.  Willie’s Stash is a collection of twelve beautifully mastered songs in which Willie teams up with his two sons, Lukas and Micah Nelson, to create this masterpiece. The only downfall to this album is that it consists of ten cover songs. Now, when an entertainer proves his / her originality to reach legendary status, then that entertainer has earned the right to record covers of well-known songs.  As Willie puts it “...kinda like the country version of ‘Stardust.’  Where you have all these great songs and standards that the young people have never heard, then all of a sudden you have a whole new audience out there.”  Which is true, especially in this case.  Willie, Lukas and Micah bring back seven songs of the immortal Hank Williams Sr. including “Move It On Over,” “Mind Your Own Business,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Why Don’t You Love Me,” and “Mansion On The Hill.”  The trio also includes their versions of Hank Cochran’s “Can I Sleep In Your Arms,” Hank Locklin’s “Send Me The Pillow You Dream On,” and Hank Snow’s “I’m Movin’ On.”  The trio’s recordings are so remarkable and original that they make each of the songs sound as if they were recently written. The two that stand out the most include “Can I Sleep In Your Arms” and “Send Me The Pillow You Dream On;” as they are performed with such heart and soul that it resonates through the speakers. In today’s music market, it is nice to hear such incredible songs from a time when songs were written without music theory.  Willie and sons include two new songs with “My Tears Fall” and “Healing Hands of Time.”  It is the later that we pull to hit our list of Top Songs of 2018, while earning a nomination for the Spirit Award’s Song of The Year Award due to it’s compassionate yet compelling message.  It must have been such an honor for Lukas and Micah to work with their father.  I can say that the two boys have certainly inherited their father’s talents, albeit they differ from their fathers.  Personally, I would love to see the Nelson brothers as a duo.  Without a doubt, these two talented young men would absolutely reach the legendary status that their father has.  I would have loved to hear new music from Willie and his sons; however, as is it is still one for the collection as you will enjoy this for years to come! If this is Volume 2, I wonder what is kind of Stash will be found in Volume 3?  $$$$
