Strictly Country Magazine Willie Nelson title

God’s Problem Child

Willie Nelson

2017 - Sony Music Entertainment.  It is very few times that we receive an album that is inviting with it’s masterful, mesmerizing and seductive music.  I have listened to this album over and over trying to find the right words to describe it. I am so intoxicated with the beautiful tender music contained within, that I can not find the words to relay it’s pure artistry.  Willie Nelson is charismatic when it comes to music.  One can hear his laid back easy mentality and vast respect for the piece within his performances.  It’s intoxicating, more so than what alcohol could ever bring.  This album opens with “Little House On The Hill,” written by Lyndel Rhodes.  Performed as a fun ditty in a Texan two-step melody, this one really sets us up for a highly-listenable album.  This album includes several new songs written by other song writers including “Old Timer.”  Written by Donnie Fritts and Lenny LeBlanc, as soon as I heard this beautiful heartfelt ballad—I knew it had Spirit Awards written all over it.  The lyrics tell the story of a man as they ride a wave of a gentle melody that is enhanced by Willie’s passionate vocals.  Willie includes another eloquent performance in “A Woman’s Love;” written by Mike Reid and Sam Hunter.  Many of the songs on this project are quite metaphoric, none more so than “Butterfly” written by Sonny Throckmorton and Mark Sherrill.  Willie gains the help from Tony Joe White, Leon Russell and Jamey Johnson in the title cut that was written by White and Johnson.  The album closes with “He Won’t Ever be Gone.”  Written by Gary Nicholson, Willie gives an emotionally-rich performance in this stunning tribute to the late Merle Haggard.  On the flip side, Willie includes seven songs that he co-wrote with the legendary songwriter Buddy Cannon.  The first we come upon is “True Love.”  This effective heartfelt ballad is sure to strike a chord with lovers as it would make for a wonderful song for any wedding.  Another song written by this legendary duo is “Delete And Fast Forward.” This some what comedic song captures the times that we live in and how we need to move past the negative events of our lives.  If it’s true country music that you are seeking then look no further than “Your Memory Has A Mind Of It’s Own.”  Mr. Nelson performs this elegant two-step ballad as an autobiographical song. Nelson picks up the melody in “Still Not Dead” as he relays the message that he is still alive, although there are some who believe that he has since passed away.  A true country music fan will always know a real Willie Nelson song from all the others.  Perhaps it’s the enticing and distinctive sound of his guitar, Trigger.  More so it’s the passion that he brings out in each of his songs.  This deep passionate feeling truly comes out in “It Gets Easier” as well as in “I Made A Mistake.”  No album from Willie Nelson is totally complete unless he includes a song about the forgotten Old West.  He does so in his song “Lady Luck.”  There are so many songs on here that far exceed our expectations to earn a nomination for the Spirit Award’s Song of The Year Award.  It was difficult to choose which ones to hit this list.  Out of the thirteen songs we chose six including “Delete And Fast Forward,” “It Gets Easier,” “Still Not Dead,” “Your Memory Has A Mind Of It’s Own,” “He Won’t Ever Be Gone” and our favorite “Old Timer.” Each of these songs will hit our list of Top Songs of 2017. We were so mesmerized by this album that we pulled the entire album and nominated it for the Spirit Award’s Album of The Year Award.  No where in modern day country music can we find an entertainer so passionate about their music.  This album is the epitome of what a real country music entertainer should comprise of—passion, elegance, pure raw emotions, vocal capabilities and more so respect for the song as it was written.  In the midst of trying to find the next big thing, we must look to the past to find the real thing.  The real thing is sitting right here.  He always has and always will.  Return to real country music that has heart, soul and more passion and compassion than all the other albums combined.  It’s time to get lost in the music and this is the album to do it with! Don’t miss this one—you’ll regret it! Thank you Willie for this one! $$$$$+++
